People Don’t Necessarily Go To English Pubs To Get Drunk, Do They?

Do they actually serve hard liquor in pubs, or mostly local beers? Do you see people trying to get really drunk really quickly in there like in American bars?
My guess is no, they go to eat pretty good foods, and drink rather slowly, and mostly go to mingle with friends. It would be rather expensive trying to get drunk in a Pub, and any experienced Drunk knows the local convenience store or discount grocery has the cheapest beers and wines, not the Pub… Please tell me your Pub experiences.
